Combined Clubs Criterium Race Report – by Jon Lindley

A number of other events attributed to small numbers for the Combined Clubs Criterium on Sunday morning (State Crit Champs, Wild West MTB etc.). Originally it was to be a Road Race however approvals from TRC were not forthcoming in time to hold the event at Boodua.

Four junior riders kicked the morning’s racing off. With the handicapper setting a tough task for the older kids. Youngest of all Sam Sullivan rode with determination right to the end to get first place, holding off his oldest sister Claudia who picked up 2nd. Halli and Jacinta were 3rd and 4th respectively. Well done Sam you won’t get as big handicap next time!!

Due to low numbers for D grade Rachael Cullen along with Alison Sullivan stepped up to C grade to put it to the blokes. The girls weathered a storm of attacks for the first 20 minutes until David Capra countered and went clear, building a good lead for most of the 2nd half of the race. At the ¾ mark David had approx. 400 metres on the chasers. It wasn’t until  Bass White decided to chase hard taking Joel Dobson with him there was a further split in the pack. The pair halving the gap to David  in the final 10 minutes of the race. Bass decided to find another gear and jumped across to David in the 2 final laps. Together with ¾ of lap to go Bass proved the quicker of the 2 in the sprint and took the win. A strong ride by Bass. Joel hung on for 3rd.

Combined A & B Grade were set a time of 40 minutes with the 3 A Graders given a lap handicap. The band of three worked like a well oil machine with each of them putting in big efforts to maintain the rage. The catch came at the 26 minute mark and Trent took no prisoners when it came, riding straight past some weary riders. Digging very deep both Dave Swann and Tori Watson hung onto the attack and found themselves in the company of the A Graders.  Impressively these two B graders hung tough for much of the rest of the race matching any attacks by the A Graders. With 2 laps to go Trent had had enough and put 200 metres into everyone at the drop of a hat. The rest fought it out in a sprint finish. Richard got the jump early and powered home for 2nd, with fellow A grader Michael Sharpe just pipping Dave Swann. Or should that now be fellow A Grader Dave. Also, an impressive ride by Tori Watson who was not far behind.
