Toowoomba started with a bleary day Sunday morning for a different format of Criterium racing, point scores. A sprint every second lap of the “Hot Dog” circuit with points awarded 5 for first, 3 for second, 2 for third, and 1 for fourth, double points for the last sprint. Racing started, under a brilliant rainbow, at 9:00 with Andrea Gormley winning the last five sprints to take out D grade.
C grade was next with Heath Mengel building up an early lead to just stay in front of a strong finishing Andrew Stevenson by one point after the final sprint.
With only two A graders the A and B grades were combined but applying a handicap to the A grade riders. They would start on minus ten points and no double points for the last sprint. Regardless, the A graders still finished first and second with Dean Russell breaking away in the third lap to win 9 of the 10 sprints and Seb Scott finished second in the last 7 sprints to just edge out Pedr Harvey by three points for second place.
